The car I always promised myself

Went to the "new" Whyte & Mackay Boat Show at Earls Court to see how it was going. Unfortunately, it wasn't going very well as visitors appear to be staying away in droves. This is a shame as the show itself was pretty good - if you like things nautical.

The highlight for me was meeting Tim Dutton who, since 1969, has been making distinctly different cars on the south coast of Sussex, all of which carry his name. The current Dutton model is the world's only practical amphibious car, the Amphijeep.

Based on a Suzuki Jimny 4x4, the Amphijeep has been exported around the world for use by a variety of people for a variety of purposes. Tim Dutton has even supplied them to Middle Eastern princes who, obviously, need to have an amphibious car parked amongst the Bentleys and the Ferraris.

For information on prices and Tim Dutton himself - virtually a one-man British motor industry - visit his website: www.timdutton.com
